Lionel Messi recovered from seeing a penalty saved to inspire Barcelona to a 2-0 victory against Alaves, becoming the first player to pass 350 goals in La Liga.
That victory maintained Barca’s perfect start to La Liga as they adjusted to life without Neymar and the injured Luis Suarez.
Messi had an opportunity to put Ernesto Valverde’s side ahead from the penalty spot in the 39th minute but his effort was saved by Alaves goalkeeper Fernando Pacheco.
However, the Argentina international made no mistake with a deflected shot on 55 minutes to earn Barca an important victory on the road, netting his 350th goal from 384 games in the league.
And soon after he had another to add to his tally as Alaves failed to clear the Messi struck home from 15 yards.
On 74 minutes, Messi was denied a hat trick as he bent the ball onto the bar. Alaves brought on Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane’s son, Enzo, but the game finished 2-0.
